Remy Hair vs Virgin Hair — What Every Salon Owner Should Know Before Ordering

Published July 22, 2026 · Gelite Hair Factory

If you stock hair extensions for your salon, you have seen the labels: Remy, Virgin, Raw, Non-Remy. What do they actually mean — and which one should you buy? Here is the definitive guide for wholesale buyers.

Hair Grades at a Glance

GradeCuticlesProcessingLifespanWholesale price
Virgin HairIntact, unidirectionalNone (never chemically processed)2–5 years$80–150/pack
Remy HairIntact, unidirectionalMinimal (gentle steam finishing)1–2 years$35–60/pack
Non-Remy HairMixed directions (fallen hair)Heavy chemical treatment3–6 months$10–20/pack

What Is Virgin Hair?

Virgin hair comes from a single donor. It has never been chemically treated or processed. The cuticles are completely intact and all aligned in the same direction. Virgin hair is the highest grade and commands the highest price.

Because virgin hair is unprocessed, it ships in its natural color — our bundles ship in natural black (1B). That is why we keep it simple: every Gelite bundle ships in natural black (1B).

What Is Remy Hair?

Remy hair also has intact cuticles aligned in one direction, preventing tangling. The difference: Remy hair may undergo mild processing — light steam treatment for texture or minimal processing that does not strip the cuticles.

Remy hair offers the best balance of quality and price for salon use. It lasts 12–24 months with proper care, can be heat-styled, and reinstalled multiple times.

What to Avoid: Non-Remy Hair

Non-Remy hair is collected from salon floors, brushes, and multiple donors. The cuticles face different directions, causing immediate tangling. Manufacturers apply heavy silicone coatings to hide the tangling — but the coating washes off after 2–3 shampoos, revealing the mess underneath.

If a price seems too good to be true, check for silicone. Wash a sample strand with clarifying shampoo. If it turns into a tangled mat, it is non-Remy with a silicone disguise.

Which Grade Should Salons Stock?

For 95% of salon clients, Remy hair is the right choice. It looks and feels premium, lasts over a year, and costs 50–60% less than virgin hair. Stock virgin hair only if you have celebrity or ultra-premium clients who specifically request it and are willing to pay $500+ per installation.
